Worker and Child, 1908 At Warnemunde in the summers of 1907 and 1908 Munch painted several pictures of workers. In this example he takes up what became one of his favorite subjects, working men returning home from their work . A chalk drawing of the subject shows the factory they have left in the distance on the right. Here he applies to proletarian life an idea he had often illustrated in other contexts, the detachment of the individual from the group. What is unusual, however, is the reason for this detachment: the mutual love of parent and child, a theme he had until now rarely dealt with. Munch had been much preoccupied with love, which formed a whole department of his Frieze of Life scheme, but previously it had been almost exclusively erotic love, with its attendant pain and adversity, that concerned him. Perhaps it was his new enthusiasm for the child and the manual worker that prompted him to combine them in a scene of spontaneous joy in each other. Yet this happiness is not unqualified. Around his right arm the father appears to be wearing a black band of mourning, indicating that he has recently become a widower and the child motherless, thereby relating the scene to Munch's own experience. Although the man has left his companions and is divided from them by the diagonal curb of the pavement, he and the little girl remain approximately aligned to the intersecting diagonal formed by the walking men, which points to his belonging to the group even though temporarily separated. The painting is executed in a rough, emphatic style, with much use of heavy impasto in the whites, perhaps intended to match the simple lives and open emotions of the working-class people represented.
