Walther Rathenau, 1907 The first decade of the twentieth century was Munch's most important period as a painter of portraits other than of himself. While his practice varied considerably, the most characteristic examples followed his own iconographic precedent of many years before, KarlJensen-Hjell (page 23); that is to say, they were full-length, life sized portraits of male artists, writers and upper-class intellectuals. Inasmuch as they were usually people he knew personally as friends and patrons, to portray them did not violate the fundamentally autobiographical nature of his art and he could apply to them the same imaginative insight he brought to bear on other aspects of his experience. Walther Rathenau (1867-1922) had been one of the first wealthy Germans to recognize Munch's greatness and had bought a painting by him as early as 1893. He was president of the big AEG company founded by his father and became an important social theorist and politician. When foreign minister he was assassinated by fanatical anti-Semites. Allowing for a very different style 22 years later,
this portrait has a good deal in common with Jensen-Hjell, both men carrying
cigars in attitudes of haughty disdain. The effect is again achieved with
the aid of a wide vertical angle of vision, in this case employed to elongate
the left leg with its glossy shoe pointing downward. The downward thrust
is reinforced by the thin diagonal shadow connecting the two feet to the
base of the door behind; a parallel diagonal would be produced by a line
joining door-knob, hand and bottom of coat. In contrast to this exaggerated
descent the small head perched on top of the erect figure seems far away
and aloof.
