M U N C H Village Shop in Vrengen, 1888 Late in the 1880s Munch produced several pictures rather more carefully and conservatively painted that those of the mid decade; perhaps he did so to tone down his reputation as a rebel, with an eye to obtaining the state scholarship he was awarded in 1889. The most conspicuous of such pictures is Spring , the largest he had so far painted, which was favorably received. Village Shop in Vrengen is unusual in being a classically composed genre subject carrying no obvious personal or emotional burden. The girl behind thecounter, however, is modeled on his sister Inger and the man with the long pipe on his father. It is painted much in the manner of Krohg, with a particularly Krohgesque color scheme emphasizing blues and pinks. Krohg was a regular summer visitor at the Danish artists' colony at the fishing town of Skagen, and the subject is of a type favored by the Danish realist impressionist painters who congregated there. In particular it is reminiscent of a qicture of 1882 by P S Kroyer, In the Grocer's Shop When There is No Fishing, which Munch may possibly have seen during his visit to Copenhagen in 1888. Traditional though this picture may appear, it contains a new feature of importance for the artist's later development: the use of a perspective recession, here much emphasized by the floor boards, in conjunction with a figure in the extreme foreground truncated by the base line. The construction was not original with Munch but he used it later in highly personal ways to suggest memory and the passage of time. Vrengen is a small village south of Oslo on the west side of Oslo Fjord. |
