M U N C H The Dead Mother, 1893 Doubtless partly as a result of the tragedies in his childhood home, Munch's mind dwelt much on death and he painted numerous scenes of death or dying. The loss of his mother at the age of five scarred him for life and, it has been suggested, may even have contributed to the grudge he held against women, in spite of being attracted to them. This picture was evidently inspired by his mother's death. The simple rectilinear composition is enlivened by colors unexpectedly bright for such a scene. Through the window the glimpse of a warm spring landscape contrasts with the coldness of death in the foreground. Munch was attracted to the idea of organic continuity, of the disintegration of individual life forming the basis for new life. The yellowof the dead woman's face matching the yellow of the sunlit grass outside hints at this idea, as does the fern placed on her pillow, as though it were growing out of her head. While the mother's body has lapsed into shapelessness, the head retains its structure, perhaps hinting at a more orthodox immortality. Many years later Munch expressed admiration for a picture by Heyerdahl, The Deathbed of the Worker , which may have been the source for the present composition; the pose of the dead figure, reversed, is quite similar, as is the idea of the window behind. Heyerdahl's painting may also have given Munch the idea of the plants on the window-sill half-hidden by a curtain in his big picture Spring , also a scene of mortal illness.
