M U N C H Summer Night's Dream (The Voice),
1893 Of course the 'voice' is probably an inner voice, the silent mating call of an aroused virgin. Munch appears to have thought of the sun, the moon and the sea as mascu- line forces which stamped the female earth with its seasonal cycle of fertility and death. The girl leans forward, her face raised, as though offering herself. But her hands are concealed behind her back; she refuses total surrender. Her verticality is supported and amplified by that of the trees; all seem to soar upward in a 'gothic' fashion. Like many before him, Munch associated Gothic architecture with tall woodland trees. From the sun a celestial force of generation, in the form of a 'solid' phallic reflection, reaches down across the water to intersect the upward thrust. A small boat, with two figures indicated by spots of black and white, doubtless symbolizes the male-female bond. As the girl's figure is truncated by the bottom of the picture and the tops of the trees by its top, they do not seem earth-bound. No horizon line limits the girl's aspiration or separates the sun from the sea; the bar of light merely spreads out to indicate the horizon, like a column with a capital at its top. Using either the sun or the moon sometimes it is difficult to tell which is intended - Munch included this form in many of his symbolic erotic paintings and prints. He himself once described it as 'the moon's golden pillar.' He may have derived the idea of the 'solid' reflection on water from Theodor Kittelsen, the Norwegian landscape and fairy-tale artist, who used it as early as 1888, before Munch. In a book of humorous drawings published in 1894, reproducing watercolors of 1893, Kittelsen, whom Munch knew and liked, included Morbid Love , the title of a recently banned book by Jaeger. Even if he had already seen The Voice or a study for it, Kittelsen's drawing seems like a prophetic parody of some of Munch's subsequent erotic productions.
