M U N C H Rue Lafayette, 1891 Views of Paris streets were popular with the impressionists. Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Raffaelli all painted them. Munch's picture is related to a balcony view of 1880 (A Balcony, Private Collection, Paris) by Gustave Caillebotte, whose studio he may have visited at the time he painted the Rue Lafayette. But the emphasis here is quite unlike anything impressionist. The profile contemplator high up on the balcony looks down on the eccentric perspective of the street far below him, full of moving people and vehicles and joined by other streets. Parallel strokes of paint blur the busy townscape into a dizzy vision. Set diagonally, across the man's line of sight, they exclude him from the street's activity. A contrast is created between the active and the contemplative life, existing, literally, on different levels. Munch connects this with a theme he frequently dealt with later, the antithesis of the crowd and the solitary individual. If the man followed his line of sight and joined the crowd, he would die. Our sense of his danger is all the greater because we seem to be looking slightly down at him, asthough from a still higher balcony which, however, is not shown, with the result that we feel suspended in mid-air, imaginatively sharing his probable acrophobia - a condition Munch himself suffered from. |
