M U N C H Night in St Cloud, 1890 Some of the numerous influences to which Munch was exposed on coming to Paris can be discerned in this picture, including the modulation of blues in a night scene from Whistler, the perspective of the room from Van Gogh, the short parallel brush strokes from him, Cezanne and many others, the view of the river and the avoidance of positive lines from impres- sionism, and the silhouetting from Seurat or Toulouse-Lautrec. The scene shows Munch's room at St Cloud overlooking the Seine. The seated figure is his close friend the poet Emanuel Goldstein, probably depicted in the capacity of the artist's own alter ego. Solemn interpretations have been applied to the picture, notably that it expresses his sorrow at the recent death of his father, symbolized by the shadow of a cross on the floor cast by the window frame. On the other hand, Munch himself wrote of sitting by this window admiring the moonlight scene outside, and in another version of the subject the man appears to be smoking a pipe, an act usually expressive of contentment. Again we are confronted with a profile figure in passive meditation, and unless explicit information is given elsewhere in the picture or in its title it is impossible to be sure of what he or she is supposed to be thinking or what ulterior meanings may be attached to the scene. Munch was too impulsive and mercurial a character for his voluminous written and spoken comments to be a reliable guide. The fact that many of his works can be interpreted in widely varying ways by different observers, all equally gripped, points to the richness and complexity of his art.
