Dr Max Linde's Four Sons,
1903 Among the currents entering Munch's art around the turn of the century was a new concern with children. He had painted them before but only sporadically. Now and for a number of years they become an important iconographic interest. Max Linde, Munch's patron and friend, commissioned this picture as a birthday present for his wife. According to what Dr Linde said many years later, Munch painted the boys just as they appeared when he first met them. They had been called in from playing in the park and, shy but curious, they lined up in front of the door to the garden room to greet the distinguished foreigner. By the time he actually painted the picture, however, he already knew them well. Of several famous precedents for such group portraits of children, the work this picture most immediately calls to mind is Hogarth's Graham Children (1742; Tate Gallery, London), which also depicts four children and to which Munch's composition bears a perhaps more than accidental resemblance in other respects. He constructs a careful design in two and three dimensions, although there is some ambiguity in the position of the eldest son. Only the third son, a mask-like expression on his face, looks as though he were actually posing for his portrait. He is placed almost exactly in the center of the picture, a stable frontal image forming a fulcrum, so to speak, for his more freely posed brothers, the two on the left adjoining him and thus perfectly balancing the more distant boy with the hat on the right. All three of these others are distinctively characterized: the oldest against the door jamb looks nonchalently bored, the youngest slightly apprehensive, while the boy on the right, his spread legs following the angle of the wall and an 'aura' emanating from his contour, seems by far the most alert; his face lights up with a Hogarthian liveliness of expression. By one who knew them when grown up it was said that as adults they all perfectly matched Munch's childhood characterizations.
