Loving Couples in the Park (The Linde Frieze),
1904 In 1904 Munch executed another commission for Linde, a 'frieze,' actually eleven separate pictures, to decorate the large nursery at his house in Liibeck. When it was finished the doctor refused to accept the work, instead buying another picture for the same price. The decoration turned out to be too large to fit the room, and in addition Munch included love motives, as here, which Linde thought unsuitable for children and which he had explicitly asked him to omit. Possibly this example again refers to the sequence of generations. We see only the top of the little girl's head; she belongs largely to the future, beyond the picture plane. The loving couple on the bench behind may represent her parents, and the two similar couples further back her grandparents. Farthest of all, the pair walking off into the distance could symbolize the endless precession of past generations. Apparently with the aim of reproducing the primitiveness of a child's conception Munch has painted this picture as a rashly simplified pattern, so much so that it is difficult to unravel the winding paths, identify objects and determine space relations. Individual features are fused but contours lack the curvilinear flow of typical art nouveau. Instead they have become harsh and angular, as though distorted by the pressure of the multitude of stiff, wiry brushstrokes that impinge against them. The result is a quality of tension and discord that may well reflect the fact that this was a time when Munch was drinking heavily and involved in brawls. Even had the frieze suited his requirements in other respects Linde would have done well to reject this picture which, whatever its merits as an exhibition piece, would be disturbing to live with even for adults.
