Inger on the Beach, 1889
Oil on canvas
49 1/4 x63 1/4 inches (126.5x162 cm)
Rasmus Meyer Collection, Bergen

Inger Munch (1868-1952) was Edvard's youngest sister and only sibling to survive him. Besides painting several portraits of her, he often used her as a model in his earlier years.

When first exhibited this picture provided another shock for the Christiania art audience, who had never seen anything like it. It is a mood painting, producing an effect of isolation and, although an outdoor scene, confinement. The hard rocks stand around Inger like jailers. Munch must have known the work of Courbet, in whose landscapes rocks are often used to express the hardness of nature and provide a sort of protective custody for the ego. Here the shut-in effect is increased by tilting the sea upwards, thereby cutting out the horizon and sky. In conjunction with the striking silhouette of the white figure, this flattens the scene, anticipating Munch's symbolist paintings of the 1890s. In fact the sea
would appear as a flat backdrop were it not for the perspective of the fishing trap and tiny boat with three figures that extend into it. They further enclose the figure of Inger and at the same time prouce a limited sense of recession; the effect is not unlike that of some Japanese screen paintings.

Inger's pose is very similar to that of the heroine of Morning , but where as that working-class girl responds to the strong light from the window, Inger receives no such external stimulus. She is bathed in the soft, diffused light of a Norwegian summer evening, lost in her own inner thoughts or memories. As already noted. Munch was prone to use stationary profile figures to represent timeless contemplation.
