M U N C H Hans Jaeger, 1889 Hans Jaeger (1854-1910), anarchist, atheist, revolutionary social and sexual moralist, and theorist of autobiographical realism, was one of the biggest influences on Munch; his lifelong affection and admiration for the man shines through in this portrait. Jaeger sits relaxed in a shabbily furnished room with his coat tightly buttoned up and wearing a hat. Possibly this indicates that poverty forces him to live through the cold Christiania winter in unheated rooms. Or it could suggest that he is ready to leave; that he is an outsider who does not belong, with no place in the society he condemns and wishes to destroy. He had lost his minor government job and been twice imprisoned for publishing his confiscated bohemian novel.He spent much of his later life in Paris. The rude table, with its lonely glass of pjolter (whisky and soda), sets him at a distance, imparting both dignity and humility. Its hard perspective lines, continued and contrasted by the soft, wavy articulations of the coat, point to his head. The right side of the face, receiving the light, seems to express humor and hope, the left, in shadow, sorrow and suffering. Whatever the interpretation, we are conscious of a complex, philosophical mind. Worthy of note is the placement of the arm on the arm of the sofa, from which the hand elegantly droops. It was a pose traditional in the portrayal of aristocracy and high-ranking ecclesiastics, going as far back as Raphael's Angela Doni and especially favored by Van Dyck. To Jaeger it lends an air of casual authority in striking contrast to the humbleness of his setting. |
