Family on the Road, 1902-03 The association of distance in space with distance in time takes many different forms in Munch's art. Whereas in the previous plate the emphasis is on regression into the past, here it is upon progression into the future. The road may be understood as a symbol of time. From rear to front we are shown three successive generations of a family, while the doll held by the child points to a fourth to come. All but the first face the front, ready to move into the future, but the grandmother has turned aside, assuming a transverse position of timeless meditation. She can progress no further along the road of life and only meditate on a blurred picture of the past, the glimpse of distant roadway and landscape fused into a flowing subjective pattern. The nearer landscape on the left, on the other hand, is painted in a more articulated fashion. Since the little girl's hat resembles a halo it would seem she and her doll are cast in the roles of Madonna and Child, an association of religion with generation Munch had previously made in his Madonna . Conspicuous by their absence are the two necessarily male members of the family; clearly Munch looked upon procreation as an essentially female function.
