Dr Daniel Jacobson, 1909 Professor Jacobson, was the head of the clinic in Copenhagen where Munch spent eight months recovering from his nervous breakdown. While there he painted this picture. Among all his full-length portraits it is unique in its freedom of color and handling. Obviously Jacobson was an imposing personality. A contemporary described him as a strange mixture of scientist, artist and poseur, all qualities Munch might be held to have captured in this extraordinary portrait. He clearly stood in awe of the doctor, and from remarks made many years later it would appear that painting this portrait was his way of for once asserting his own ego and supremacy: 7 wanted to say something too, so I asked him to pose for me. I placed him in the picture, big and strutting in a fire of color like all hell. Then he pleaded with me - became tame like a pigeon.' Planted firmly with his legs apart, Jacobson stands with one arm akimbo and the other behind his back, a mixture of swagger and withdrawal. The handsome head with its greenish moustache and beard is carefully modeled while the rest of the figure is largely rendered in parallel strokes of paint, mostly vertical, emphasizing the man's height. To the left, such streaks in bright red form a vibrating atmospheric accompaniment to the figure which in conjunction with the chaotic turbulence of the shadow on the right and the hot colors of the whole picture creates an effect of diabolical intensity. Art nouveau curves and synthetist image-patterns have virtually disappeared, to be replaced by an expressionistic, perhaps even caricatural, transfiguration of what is directly perceived.
