Dance on the Shore, 1900-02 For the sheer beauty of its color pattern and a rhythmically
flowing design of almost Chinese elegance Munch rarely equaled this picture.
In addition it creates a strange romantic mood of the interaction of humanity
and nature tinged with hints of perversion. It is an unusually pure art
nouveau conception, in calligraphic lines and strands of color, with hardly
any indication of depth beyond recognizable changes of scale. The sun's
light crosses the sea without the harsh intervention of a horizon line,
which would have created distance and disturbed the delicate curvilinear
pattern. As the column of reflection approaches the shore the ripples
in the water split it into separate images, like drops of heavenly semen
about to enter the cavity in the undulating feminized seashore. Nearby
two girls dance together, framed by the graceful tree branch, the one
the familiar virginal blonde in white, the other a yellow clad, red-haired
sensualist, who tries to drag her reluctant partner into the ambit of
the sun (for lesbian purposes?). Glimpsed between the two main branches
of the tree on the right are two hooded older women, perhaps the mothers
of the dancers. On the extreme right a woman inbright red reclines in
sorrow, doubtless No obvious man is present to disturb this female domain, but a note of foreboding is struck by the weird creature beneath the gap in the shore, seemingly partly covered by what looks like a sheet of paper. Possibly this is a harbinger of the perversions of nature resulting from misalliance that Munch later described in the story Alpha and Omega which he wrote and illustrated in 1909 while under treatment for alcoholism in Dr Jacobson's clinic.
