Bathing Boys,
1904 Around the turn of the century Munch painted several pictures of bathers, both male and female. In the present example he divides the picture space roughly into two zones, a foreground consisting of the beach, in which the figures are treated fairly realistically, and a background of bathers in the sea, reduced to a fluid art nouveau memory image in a completely different perspective. The youth in the foreground adopts a masculine swagger as if to assert his maturity Behind him two boys appear to engage in homosexual play. As they become more distant, those in the sea are increasingly fused by the art nouveau pattern into simplified curvilinear shapes suggestive of embryos or primitive organisms. For the parts of their bodies under water this is not altogether implausible, as the refraction and rippling of the surface would normally cause some distortion. But Munch distorts the whole figure, the parts above the water surface as much as those below. Near the shore the figures become somewhat more mature and realistic. What results is a suggestion that the background represents a dim memory of the biological evolution of the past, distance in space again signifying distance in time. If that is the case it is possible the evolution portrayed may be intended to be that of humanity as a species as well as of individual man. Munch may have been aware of the well-known recapitulation theory of the German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), who maintained that the embryological development of the individual repeats the evolution of the species.
