The Great Masturbator, 1929 Following Gala's return to Paris in September 1929, Dali returned to Figueras where he shut himself away in his studio for the whole of the following month and executed two related works, The Enigma of Desire and The Great Masturbator which he described as follows: 'It represented a large head, livid as wax, the cheeks very pink, the eyelashes long and the impressive nose pressed against the earth. This face had no mouth, and in its place was an enormous grasshopper. The grasshopper's belly was decomposed and full of ants. Several of these ants swarmed across the space that should have been filled by the non-existent mouth of the great anguishing face, whose head terminated in architectural ornamentation of the style of 1900'. Gala had departed without their relationship having been consummated and this work expresses the sexual anguish and auto-eroticism which assailed Dali in his solitude. The enormous head derives from a rock formation at Cadaques and is also a self-portrait. This motif occurs in a number of Dali's paintings, notably The Enigma of Desire, The Persistence of Memory and The Lugubrious Game . The source of this image is a childhood experience which Dali described as one of the great enigmas ofhis life. Having previously liked grasshoppers he discovered one morning that a slimy little fish which he had caught and was examining had a face like a grasshop per. Thereafter, the grasshopper became a nightmare thing to Dali, capable of in spiring feelings of extreme terror, associated here with sex. This is reflected in the chain of connections linking the rigid stamen of the lily, the lion's head with its lascivious tongue, and the woman's head inclining toward male genitalia. Dali attributed his sexual neurosis to 'a false memory, of my mother sucking, devouring my penis . . .' the consequences of this fear manifested in the solitary figure embracing an outcrop of rock in the shape of a woman, and another figure wandering alone.
