Self-Portrait with the Neck of
Raphael, 1921 This self-portrait is one of several which Dali executed during 1921, a critical year in his personal and artistic development. On February 6,1921 his mother died. Dali had worshiped her and he described this event as 'the greatest blow I had experienced in my life'. The following September he left the family home at Figueras and entered the School of Fine Arts at Madrid. Throughout his childhood and early teenage years Dali used to spend his summer vacations at Cadaques on the Costa Brava, where his parents had a holiday home. The cove of Seboya which is connected by road to Cadaques can be seen in the background of this painting. As it was probably painted during the summer, this portrait must therefore have been completed in the aftermath of loss and in anticipation of commencing an independent life to develop the artistic talent evident in this work. In style it reflects Dali's movement away from the Impressionist palette which had characterized his paintings hitherto, and his adoption of what he called 'exuberant colors' which reflects the influence of Fauvism. The composition is dramatic. Dali depicts himself against the wide expanse of the bay yet his own image dominates the painting. The light reflected from the water below illuminates his face as he turns away momentarily to look out of the painting. As in his other self-portraits at this time,Dali takes the opportunity to show off his long sideburns of which he was particularly proud. This affectation earned him the nickname 'Senor Patinas'. He fixes the viewer with a stare bordering on con- tempt, his expression grave yet sensitive. The impression evoked is that of the visionary and the aesthete surveying himself, his world and his future; and the confident tilt of the head suggests the vision which Dali recorded in his autobiography, The Secret Life: T would go my way with head held high, full of pride'.
